CAMBOURNE DRAWING & WATERCOLOURS

FOR THOISE WHO ATTENDED CLASS TODAY, HERE IS YOUR REFERENCE AND THE WORK YOU DID, WELL DONE, GREAT PROGRESS!
REMBER VALUE MASS, HARD AND SOFT EDGES, AND MIXING COLOURS ON THE PAPER WITHOUT FIDDLING!

For those who were'nt there today, and have missed one or more classes, this blog is not a substitute for attending class, especially so early on in a beginners course where I am teaching the building blocks of watercolour and drawing technique in sequential learning, I am structuring the course for learners to move from one learning outcome to the next, and absences at this early stage is likely to lead to you struggling to keep up with those who have fully attended so far, which is only 3 of you.

This is not an accredited course, and you are here voluntarily, however it makes my job harder, and your experience less enjoyable if I see you struggling with a learning outcome, knowing that the only remedy for it is for you to have spent a whole class learning it, or for me to spend extra time catching you up, reviewing your homework or writing comprehensive blog lessons for you, which is very time consuming.
I know you all have busy lives, but taking time out at this early stage may lead you to be dissapointed in your progress.
It is half term next week, so no class then, but we will return the week after that.

WEDNESDAY BEGINNERS WATERCOLOURS

SORRY GUYS, I THINK THIS CLASS WAS TOO BIG A JUMP FOR YOU TODAY, I SHOULD HAVE STARTED YOU OFF WITH SOMETHING MORE BASIC WHEN LEARNING COLOUR SHAPES

ABOVE, IT IS EASIER TO SEE TONE WHEN TRANSLATED IN BLACK AND WHITE, ALSO SEEING COLOUR AND TONE SHAPES REQUIRES YOU TO EXAGGERATE AND SIMPLIFY WHAT IT IS YOU ARE SEEING, WHICH IS NOT EASY.

PERHAPS IT IS A LITTLE EASIER TO THINK OF THE SHADOW ON THE BALL AND THE TABLE AS 1 TONE SHAPE, WHICH WOULD BE 1 COLOUR SHAPE IF IT WERE IN COLOUR.
PLEASE HAVE A PRACTISE PAINTING OR DRAWING THIS IN OVER HALF TERM, IN GREY OR 1 COLOUR.
DO A CLEAR WASH OVER THE WHOLE OF THE BALL AND IT'S SHADOW, AND ADD THE PIGMENT TO THE SHADOW AND THE RIGHT HAND SIDE OF THE BALL ONLY, ALLOWING THE PIGMENT TO HAVE A SOFT EDGE ON THE BALL.

BELOW IS AN EXAMPLE OF A COLOUR SHAPE WHICH ENCOMPASSES ALL OF THE GREEN FOLIAGE ON THE PLANT

THE BACKGROUND COLOUR IDENTIFIES THE WHITE OF THE FLOWERS IN WATERCOLOUR ON THE RIGHT, WHICH IS THE WHITE OF THE PAPER IN THE PAINTING, BUT WHEN DRAWN ON COLOURED PAPER WE CAN ADD THE WHITE TO MAKE IT STAND OUT

WED MORNING WATERCOLOURS STILL LIFE

I think today's lesson was a little too difficult, there was an awful lot of detail, I think perhaps I should have stuck to the lemons and demonstrated just that, but here is your reference if you would like to carry on with it.

Below are the lemons at Brown's cafe' in Cambs which inspired me.
